Future sociologists: Are you wondering if you should get into studying Sociology? Does it sound like fun because you get to figure out why social interaction is the way it is? Do you ever sit back and think about all the exciting adventures you could have in the name of research? If so, Sociology might be for you.
But before you jump in, consider this: I just spent all day reading about US imperialism and the construction and justification of historical invasions in the name of ridding the world of communism. Talk about a downer. Everything you know has been constructed to make you think and act in a specific way that conforms to culture. More than that, there are hidden forms of power that act to constrain us in ways we can't even imagine. My word of warning: if you take up Sociology, be prepared to find fault in everything. Of course, if everyone thought like Sociologists (especially not taking things at face value) the world would probably be a better place. Sometimes, though, I wish I was still blind to the ways of the world. That way I could live my life in blissful ignorance.
Today's Grad Gravy: Look for the good parts too.
